Chapter Six

Bindi

Emma holds my arm as we round the corner. There’s a guard sitting near the cell block entrance at the front desk, and Emma waves to him. His eyes flicker over to me, then back to her.

“James!” she calls out, waving. She pushes me forward towards the door.

I’m worried. The soldier has a gun in his holster. I’m sure he’ll stop us. He’ll question Emma.

“You have to help us,” she says, her voice high and nervous-sounding. We move closer to him.

“Emma, what’s going on out there?” he asks. “It sounds like a madhouse—”

Before he can say another word, Emma’s knife is out and she whips her arm around, slicing the soldier’s throat. Blood spurts hot and steaming in the chilly air. He grabs at his throat uselessly, spitting red froth, then crumples to the ground.

Emma bends down and picks up the keys from his belt. She clips them to her own belt and gestures to me.

“Come on,” she says.

I’m in awe. Emma, despite us getting off on the wrong foot, continually surprises me with her strength. And her ability to push through whatever obstacle gets in her path. It must have been hard as a woman in the military, and I’m seeing what came of that right now. She’s like a bulldozer knocking everything out of our way.

She pushes open the door and we’re inside the cell block.

One step in and I freeze. The smell here shocks the senses—blood and shit and rot—but that’s not what does it. The dim fluorescent lights flicker and I can hardly breathe.

The bars. The cages.

Farther down the hallway of the prison I hear the men and women trapped inside, moaning, shouting. Something closes tightly around my heart, pinches me so that I can’t even take a breath, can’t feel my heart beating anymore. I am back in the prison cell with Kit with me.

“Come on!” Emma tugs at my arm, and the shock of pain running through my shoulder jerks me back to reality. I take another step into the dim prison. It feels like the walls and ceiling are closing in on me, but I can’t think about myself now. I force myself to imagine Kit’s face, her bright red hair and bright green eyes. I picture Lily, sweet and pale. They’re the reason I’m here.

One nervous step, then another, and then I’m running next to Emma, running through the hallways. On either side of me, prisoners moan and yell, but I am looking for my girls.

Emma and I reach the end of the hall without finding either Kit or Lily.

“The next corridor,” Emma says. “There’s a lot of cell blocks here. I’m not sure which one they’re on.”

We push the door to the next corridor open and I go first, sprinting around the hallway corner. I can feel something now. We’re closer, I can tell. I can’t hear the girls yet, but I know they’re here, I know they’re close.

I run down one hallway. There are children here, and I want to let them out, but I can’t stop now.
